Description:
This project consists of three pods of 3-story structures for a total of 248 dorm rooms and 496 beds. Each pod consists of three buildings with bearing masonry walls with brick veneer and concrete slabs. The previous phases were built with these three buildings orientated in a triangle shape with an open courtyard and a service in the middle of each triangle. The challenge of our Design/Build team on Phase V was to maintain the same format on the dorm rooms, but convert the open courtyard into a fully air-conditioned atrium with all the same services plus additional meeting and study areas. The outcome, to control costs, was two separate structural systems incorporated into one building  (The dorm rooms are masonry and concrete; the atrium is structural steel to span the greater distance).
