SPOTLIGHT:
'Laborious' projects on the First Coast

Perry-McCall is building upon its niche as a leader in educational and laboratory construction, having delivered multiple state-of-the-art research laboratory and teaching facilities in Northeast Florida in the last year. Some of these advanced facilities include:

St. Johns River Community College
Science Consortium

The $9.2 million Science Consortium at St. Johns River Community College is one part of four separate science laboratory and teaching facilities being constructed on college campuses throughout Florida. This particular Science Consortium was designed to support a number of science and health-related programs, mainly natural sciences and nursing programs, and is located at SJRCC's Orange Park campus.

Flexibility of design for instructional space was a paramount challenge, as well as the recognition of advancements in utility and ventilation technology to create a building capable of being updated as the demands of these technologies change over time. This facility includes modern classrooms and innovative, fully-functional hospital room simulation laboratories for the students, as well as offices and work areas for the faculty.

University of Florida
Biomedical Research Laboratory

The $3.2 million University of Florida Biomedical Research Laboratory at Shands Jacksonville consisted of the complete interior demolition and rebuilding of the 11,200 sq. ft. former Child Crisis Center Building to provide nine complete laboratory suites, tissue culture area, dark room/microcopy area, PI offices, graduate student technology area, new stairs and an elevator addition.

All existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were removed and replaced with new systems, which included upgrading to a 480 volt system. The heating and ventilation system was changed from roof top units to a chilled and heated water system. A new emergency generator was added along with a new fire sprinkler system. The modern research labs included state-of-the-art furnishings, lab case work and new fume hoods with extensive exhaust systems.

University of Florida
Whitney Center for Marine Studies

Perry-McCall also constructed the $3.4 million University of Florida Whitney Center for Marine Studies. Located on the waters edge of Marineland near St. Augustine, amidst virtually every coastal habitat in Florida, this educational facility offers a learning experience to a wide range of students.

A day at the Whitney Lab delivers an exciting look at marine science to children from grades 3 to 7 as they view local marine species in the research labs or in their own natural habitat. Evenings at Whitney Lab offer a monthly public lecture series that enables the local community to remain current on issues in the marine and biological sciences. This facility houses a 260-person auditorium, several dedicated classrooms and laboratories with aquatic tanks for marine specimens, and public exhibition space.

Additional projects
Additional projects in Northeast Florida include the Cecil Center campus expansion for Florida Community College at Jacksonville. This $12 million, 44,000 sq. ft. building replaced the modular buildings which opened in 2004. The facility includes technology-rich classrooms and laboratories, a library, two auditoriums, a full-service student center and support facilities. The facility also does double duty as a public hurricane shelter for area residents.

Also completed for FCCJ is the Nassau Technical Career Center in Yulee, Florida. This innovative 45,000 sq. ft., $6.9 million state-of-the-art facility offers technical training in information technology, health sciences, hospitality management and building construction technology.
